Summer 2012

Overview

This summer program provides students with a comprehensive experience combining cultural integration, historical and business site-visits and course instruction. Students will have the option to take 3 credits (either a business course or a humanities course), or 6 credits (one business course and one humanities course) in a two or three week module. Students in both courses will partake in day trips to the surrounding countries of France and Germany!

Accommodations

Student housing during the program will be in a clean, modern hotel in the City Center of Luxembourg. Students have easy access to campus and other activities. Most bed rooms hold 4 students and include a bathroom with shower. The bedrooms are modest, but are adequate for the purpose of resting. There are also common areas with Internet access, as well as a cafeteria and an outside terrace for socializing, eating and studying. You may find a video on the accommodation center as well as further information on the campus in Fairfield, CT. Note: one group meal per day (except in Paris) is included in your fees.

Academic Calendar 2012

  1. Three week study abroad May 19 - June 10, 6 credits
    Students taking this option will take one business course for weeks 1-2 and on humanities course for weeks 2-3. Therefore, there would be an overlap of the 2 courses during the second week.
  2. Two week study abroad May 19 - June 4, 3 credits
    Business track
  3. Two week study abroad May 26 - June 10, 3 credits
    Humanities track

Course Information

Session 1 (Week 1-2):

  1. Principles of Marketing (MK 201, 3 credits), Professor Anca Micu
    Investigates the components of the marketing mix. A managerial approach is employed and case studies supplement each area of exploration. Topics include: customer behavior, product policy, channels of distribution, advertising and promotion, price policy, internet marketing programs and digital marketing. Prerequisites: none.
  2. European Integration (BU/EC/FN 342, 3 credits) Dr. Alfred Steinherr
    Students will examine the process underlying economics and political integration of the European Union from the Treaty of Rome to present. Special emphasis will be placed on the establishment of the single market for goods and services, free movement of labor and capital, the European Monetary System followed by the European Monetary Union and the EU enlargement. The Euro Crisis will be analyzed in detail. Students should be equipped with an introductory course in micro and macro economics. Prerequisites: EC 202 and EC 203.

    Corporate Visits
    In addition to classes, students will also spend credit hours visiting businesses in Luxembourg and applying what you are learning. This includes favorites like the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Court of Justice (which last year's students loved), we are including a visit to a technology company base in Luxembourg, Skype, which is very popular with our students.

Session 2 (Week 2-3):

  1. Literary Travelers, Exiles, and Expatriates (ENG 286/FR 371, 3 credits), Professor Claire Marrone, Ph.D.
    This comparative course focuses on literary representations of travel, exile, and expatriation. Our emphasis shall be on the twentieth century through contemporary times. We shall read pieces by authors from America, France, and Luxembourg in a variety of genres. These include the novel, autobiography, and letters. We shall examine such issues as life abroad and life in exile, bicultural and multicultural identity, displacement and sugjectivity, bilingual or multilingual existence, and confrontations with foreign cultures. Possible texts include Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast and Annie Ernaux's La honte (Shame). The main course is taught in English. Students seeking French credit for the class shall read works in French in the original language and complete assignments and exams in French. Students seeking English credits for the course will read foreign works in translation. Prerequisites for ENG 286 is EN/CC 102, for FR 371 is FR 201 and 202 or placement.

  2. Christianity, Civilization, and Spirituality: A Journey Through 2000 Years of a Living Tradition (RS 299, 3 credits) Dr. Dr. Jean Ehret
    In this interactive course, students will visit sites and monuments closely connected to Christianity's 2000 year long history in Luxembourg, France, and Germany; they will study texts and artwork from different periods related to the places they visit; they will discover the continuous creativity of Christianity and its contribution to European civilization. However, the course intends not only at exploring Christianity's history, but also at introducing students to the theological principles of the living and ongoing tradition. Prerequisites: RS 101.

    Corporate Visits
    In addition to classes, students will also spend credit hours visiting cathedrals, monuments and other various cultural and historical sites.

Program Costs

Note: College of Business students (at SHU) who are currently enrolled in The Welch Experience and who have not yet utilized their study abroad tuition credit are exempt from paying the tuition portion of the program cost ($1,500) when taking one business course. In order to take advantage of the waiver program, you must apply here.

6 Credit Option (3 week program: Session 1 + Session 2)
Sacred Heart University will bill students for the items listed below. Students will be asked to submit a $500 non-refundable deposit payable to "Sacred Heart University" with their application packet (if a student is not admitted to the program, the payment will be returned). The remaining balance owed to Sacred Heart University would then be $4,920 ($3,420 for Welch Waiver students).

3 Credit Option (2 week program: Session 1 (business track) OR Session 2 (humanities track)
Sacred Heart University will bill students $3,420 ($1,920 for Welch Waiver students) for the items listed below.

In summary, the following is included in your program fees:

  • Tuition for 3 or 6 credit hours
  • HTH international insurance
  • Shared accommodations (4 per room)
  • One group meal per day (except in Paris)
  • Field trips/sightseeing activities as described above (transportation, entrance fees, etc.)
  • Day trip to Trier, Germany
  • Day trip to Metz, France
  • Overnight stay in Paris, France
  • All class related in-country transportation within Luxembourg (airport transfer, bus tickets, etc.)
  • Orientation and support in Fairfield and in Luxembourg
