Undergraduates Program Summer 2013

INTRODUCTION

This is your chance to study abroad at Sacred Heart University Luxembourg, a well established campus in the heart of the European Union. This summer program provides students with a comprehensive experience combining cultural integration, historical and business site-visits and course instruction. Students will have the option to take 3 credits (either a business course or a humanities course), or 6 credits (one business course and one humanities course) in a two or three week module. Students in both courses will partake in day trips to the surrounding countries of France and Germany!

ACCOMODATIONS

Your housing while on the program will be in a clean, modern hotel in the City Center of Luxembourg.  You'll have easy access to campus and other activities.  Most bed rooms hold 4 students and include a bathroom with shower. The bedrooms are modest, but are adequate for the purpose of resting. There are also common areas with Internet access, as well as a cafeteria and an outside terrace for socializing, eating and studying. You may find a video on the accommodation center as well as further information on the campus here. Note: one group meal per day (except in Paris) is included in your fees.

STUDY TOURS

During the program you will visit two additional countries: France and Germany.  These countries are only short trips away and have beautiful cities close to the border.  In addition to visiting sites within the city center of Luxembourg, you will have day trips to the below locations and an overnight trip to Paris.  You will also be able to take hiking tours to see more of the countryside, and the program includes a boat trip along the river Mosel.

  • Vianden and Clervaux, Luxembourg: Vianden lies on the Our river, near the border between Luxembourg and Germany. It is known for its impressive castle and beautiful location. Clervaux is a medieval market town, sunk into a narrow and tortuous valley, surrounded by rugged hills covered with woods.
  • Metz, France: Metz is a lovely town along the River Moselle with attractive architecture (famous for the yellow stone buildings) and beautiful riverside parks and gardens which are responsible for its nickname of "Ville Jardin" or Garden City.  Its centerpiece is the Cathedrale St-Etienne on place d'Armes.  The university founded here in the 1970's contributes to the liveliness of the town.
  • Trier, Germany: Historic Trier is one of Germany’s oldest cities and is rich with traces of the Roman Empire.  The cathedral built by Constantine in 326 is Germany's oldest.  Trier is a very walkable town with many shops, a lively market square (Hauptmarkt) and a great atmosphere for spending a day.
  • Paris, France: (Subject to change) Paris is one of the most amazing cities in the world and is only a short train ride away! This wonderful city, full of history and culture, is home to Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, Saint-Chapelle, and more. Students will have the opportunity to stay at a modern youth hotel right in the heart of the city, near the Eiffel Tower and Champs-Elysées. This overnight study trip is included in your tuition: round-trip train, overnight stay in youth hotel, day-cruise and course instruction! CITY SUBJECT TO CHANGE

2.     City Symphonies: Europe in Film (CM 384, 3 credits), Professor Sara Ross

The beauty of Europe has been the inspiration for numerous masterpieces of cinema. Among these are the famous City Symphonies, which explore the stunning images and hidden rhythms of cities such as Berlin, Paris, Nice, and Odessa. In this interactive class, students will explore representations of Europe in film, with a particular focus on the myth and reality of Europe’s great cities. We will consider films produced in Luxembourg, France and Germany, as well as American films set in Europe. An exploration of Luxembourg’s resplendent film locations and its small but vibrant filmmaking community will enhance classroom screenings and discussions. Students will also venture out, camera in hand, to shoot their own video ‘symphony’ of one of the cities that we visit, such as Luxembourg City, Paris, Clervaux, Metz or Trier. The thoughtful contemplation and attention to detail required to shoot a ‘city symphony’ will enrich the students’ experience of their travel, and in the process they will create a truly one of a kind souvenir of their trip. (No experience with video necessary – we will provide you with small, user-friendly cameras.)

3.     The Politics of Race, Ethnicity and Migration in the European Union (SO 299, 3 credits), Professor Amanda Moras. This course will explore constructions of race and identity in the European Union, highlighting the various contexts and understandings of race across national borders. While the main focus of this course will be on countries in the EU we will also be using the US as a comparative context.  Through our study we will develop an understanding of how race and ethnicity are socially constructed though international and national politics, migration policies, and the economy. No pre-requisites.
