Is an MBA worth it?

Are all MBA programs equal?

No, not all MBA programs are equal. We know that you have many options today for acquiring additional education, from global online resources to our local competitors. As our prospective students are savvy consumers, we know you are weighing your options carefully. Please know, we are the ONLY globally accredited university MBA program in Luxembourg. We have the honor of being accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Our MBA programs meet the highest standards and are officially authorized by the Luxembourg Ministry of Higher Education.

What makes the accreditation system important?

The accreditation ensures the highest standards especially as it pertains to the professors and adjunct professors hired by the university. Not only do students want conveniently scheduled classes and locations, interesting course work, true peers in the classroom and challenging subjects but MOST importantly, our students want engaged professors who possess real intellect and who have been in real-life corporate situations. Where can I find information about the US accreditation system?

In the United States, accreditation of a university is done by one of nine regional accreditation agencies. Sacred Heart University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. For more information, visit: In order to be eligible for the AACSB accreditation, business schools must first be accredited by their regional agency.

What is the main difference between the MBA and the MBA with Internship?

The MBA with Internship program is a full-time program offering students with little or no experience the opportunity to work in a professional environment using newly acquired skills from their course work. As part of the program, students will have a 6-9 month paid internship with a prestigious domestic or international company. This professional experience will help students to develop the skills to thrive in complex business environments.

What are the differences between the US and the EU campuses?

The same SHU MBA program exists in two places—Fairfield, Connecticut (USA) and Luxembourg City, Luxembourg (EU). However, the MBA with Internship program is only offered in Luxembourg. At SHLU, additional course material may be discussed surrounding European policy and viewpoints i.e., Accounting and Law . The Luxembourg courses are either taught by US main campus professors or Luxembourg-based practitioners with strong academic qualifications. Once accepted into the MBA program in Luxembourg, you are matriculated as a student on the main campus in Fairfield and always have the option to take courses in the US.

How many courses are there in the MBA program?

The MBA is structured around 8 core courses and 3 electives, giving students the opportunity to focus on an area of interest to them, such as management or finance. Our programs are designed for ambitious individuals wishing to pursue their professional activities while acquiring a graduate degree.

Foundation courses may be required if you have no academic background in management, economics or statistics. Each of the two foundation courses is worth 3 academic credits and requires 36 hours of class contact (3x12 hours of class contact).

When, where and for how long are classes held?

Classes are held in the evenings, Monday through Friday. Each class lasts three hours. Some classes are exceptionally held on the weekend.

Classes are located at the Chamber of Commerce in Kirchberg, in the heart of Luxembourg’s business district. Some classes are also offered online.

Each course usually runs 6  to 12 weeks.

When can I start the Part-time MBA, MBA with Internship, or Certificate program?

The Part-time MBA and Certificate programs are ongoing programs that allow you to start at almost any time of the year.

The MBA with Internship starts every year in mid-August or mid-July if foundation courses are required.

Application deadlines are:
European/EEA students - 1 June of the year you start the progam
All other students - 1 March

How long will it take to complete the Part-time MBA program?

On average, it takes students two years to complete the program. You are allowed up to six years for completion of the program.

How long will it take to complete the MBA with Internship program?

It is a 16-month program including the 9-month internship.

What is a Certificate program?

Certificate programs are graduate-level, advanced studies in specialized skills. Develop new skills and build expertise in a specialized area to update your professional profile, advance your career, or broaden your knowledge base. You can earn a professional graduate certificate at SHULU in the following areas:  Corporate Finance, Digital Management, Leadership, and Private Equity.

How many courses are there in the Certificate program?

There are 4 courses in each certificate program. These series is unique to the Certificate you choose.

Can certificate courses count towards an MBA?

Yes, of course! Credits can be transferred to the MBA program and tuition fees will be adjusted. Meet with the SHULU office staff for more details.

How long will it take to complete a Certificate program?

It takes 16 months to complete a Certificate program.

Candidacy & Administrative Requirements

What is the process for a student visa for non-EU students?

Student visas will only be granted to students who are enrolling in the MBA with Internship program. Once students have been admitted to the university, they will need to  apply for a student visa. Our staff will help you with the visa process. IMPORTANT: This process can take 3 to 4 months.

Do I need to have a university degree to do an MBA at SHU?

You will need to have a Bachelor’s degree. For those prospective students with the equivalent of four years of university study, your non-US degree can be evaluated by the SHULU office staff.

Do I need to have a university degree to do a Certificate program at SHU?

No, you do not need a university degree to participate in this program. Please contact us to evaluate your professional work experience.

Do I need to take the GMAT?

Waivers are not automatic for any candidate. GMAT waiver requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and are based on a combination of advanced academic credentials with a substantial history of professional achievement.

You are eligible for a GMAT waiver if you have:

- A graduate degree from an accredited institution, or a J.D., Ph.D. or M.D.
- A professional certification i.e. CPA, CFA, CMA, CIA or CFP
- A SHU Certificate with a min GPA of 3.5
- 5+ years of substantive work experience. Factors considered include scale and scope of responsibilities, managerial scope, and accountability for final fiscal or economic results, including certification of the work of others and data analysis for clients or employer. A letter from an employer or supervisor detailing specific work responsibilities is required, but may be included in a letter of recommendation.

Do I need to do TOEFL/ IELTS if English is not my first language?

Maybe. As part of our supportive learning environment, we want to set you up for success. A lack of English proficiency can be a serious obstacle to your performance in the MBA program. If you did your studies in English or you worked in an English environment for several years you don’t need to pass an English test.

Our staff can assist in assessment and finding tutoring if required.

Can I transfer credits from my previous school?

Sacred Heart University is an accredited university. If you have taken some courses at other accredited universities, our academic review board will review the syllabus for each course and more than likely the credits will be transferred directly to your SHU program here in Luxembourg.

What if I can't finish all my courses here in Luxembourg to get my Part-time MBA diploma?

You will be able to transfer your SHU academic credits to other high-caliber academic institutions.

I’m accepted. What do I do now?

We recommend meeting with the Academic Director to plan your course of study. At this meeting, you will review the order of courses necessary to complete the degree, and will decide how your availability fits into completing the coursework. All schedules can be tailored to fit the individual student.
