4TH OF JULY ALUMNI NETWORKING DRINK
Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 6:30 pm
The 4th of July is one of the best-loved traditional celebration days in the U.S. where people gather together with friends, family and neighbors to celebrate American Independence Day—a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.
It’s a day when Americans love to let their hair down, relax and have some fun.
This year, the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology and the SHU Luxembourg Alumni Association bring together our fellow American university alumni associations, the Cornell Club of Luxembourg, the Harvard Club of Luxembourg and the Thunderbird Graduate School for International Management Luxembourg Alumni Chapter, to proudly celebrate the 4th of July at the world’s first Conversion Hub! Foundry is a totally unique environment, community and working space in the heart of Luxembourg City. We could not wish for a more appropriate venue to connect the American university community!
The #4thofSHUly celebrations come at the perfect time for JWCOB students!

“My Journey to Luxembourg with the Sacred Heart University MBA with Internship Program” -Patrycja Stala
Growing up I considered myself blessed. Over the years, I witnessed my beloved parents overcome adversity and become successful entrepreneurs out of sheer hard work and perseverance. I was born in Czestochowa, Poland, 24 years ago, to two young parents living in a small village with in difficult financial situation. Just a few years before, communism had ended in our country and everyone faced a challenging time.
My Initial Academic Plan:
Early in my student life, my plans for the future always tended to revolve around Science. I loved to read encyclopedias and searched for every science program available on TV. Everything about science interested me, but most of all it was the logic and creativity behind it that fulfilled my curiosity. For a long time I thought I wanted to pursue a career in medicine and in fact I earned my first degree in nutrition from a medical university in Poland.
Big Change in Our Family:
When I turned 17, my parents ventured into the business of owning grocery stores. It was a challenging start in this new initiative. However, I rapidly attained knowledge and developed involvement in our new direction. From the very beginning I participated and helped my family as much as possible.
My parents were never discouraged and soon the business began to turn more and more prosperous. In a short time, I came to know everything about our family business from ground zero. Three years later, we decided to join a franchise grocery chain and with this merger I moved up internally once more and became an official manager. As our store’s popularity increased, my job became even more challenging. Enlarging our company spending, selling, and a larger employee team all brought on new requirements to our organization.
My increasing inspiration from my parents and my thirst for more knowledge also contributed to my new ideas. Today I realize the valuable experience I gained. In my situation I acquired the opportunity to apply what I learned each day directly into practice. It was during these changing times, and with the turn in success and progress, that I realized my growing passion for entrepreneurship.
My Search for Business Schools
After deciding to pursue my degree in Business Administration, I began researching programs, initially in the United States. I took entrance exams and started applying to schools.
One sunny day during spring vacation, after I had taken my exams, I was yachting with a group of friends on the lakes of the beautiful region of Masuria in the North East of Poland, when my phone rang and an unrecognized number popped up on my screen.
A Sacred Heart University, Jack Welch College of Business & Technology representative was calling and I was informed of all details about the MBA with internship program in Luxembourg. A bonus was the fact that Sacred Heart is an American University with a campus in Luxembourg, one of the wealthiest country in Europe. This meant I could gain experiences from both continents. The idea of doing an internship while studying really appealed to me because it meant practicing what I learned right away.
After carefully considering and comparing SHU with all the schools I’d applied to, I felt this program offered exactly what I was looking for; it suited my needs and especially caught my attention with the quality internship program. Overall I was looking for a highly professional school with a world-wide accreditation that would provide me with great academic courses and real work experience at the same time.
Why Sacred Heart University
My admission went smoothly, and the staff extended support and assistance through the entire process. From application to graduation the administration and professors at SHU are there for me. The university helps coach and mentor students into getting a quality internship. Prior to the Master’s program, the only professional background I had was the experience working at the family store and I was not sure how to approach and enter the workforce on my own.
What I value in SHU Luxembourg is the large diversity in my classes, the personal contact and guidance, and a fantastic relationship with our teachers and staff. Luxembourg is one of the most culturally diverse places on earth which not only adds to my experience, but also feeds my soul.
Imagine a situation where you are settled with a great paid job and vacations on time; then you decide to venture into your own business. Sound scary and challenging?
To stay ahead or a change in career; to get a promotion, these are some of the main goals for pursuing an MBA. But Lene Pedersen, decided to take a distinctive turn in her career to become an entrepreneur.
Lene was Head of Marketing & Communication at CIP Group while she was pursuing her MBA at SHU. After graduating in 2013, Lene took a chance and started a new journey as an entrepreneur.
Today Lene is the Owner and Managing Director of LeneLife, a service that gives customers a balanced lifestyle based on a healthy body, soul and mind. Lene shares that she is happy to be in a business which helps define herself.
Watch to learn more about her experience at SHU!
