“My Journey to Luxembourg with the Sacred Heart University MBA with Internship Program” – Patrycja Stala
Growing up I considered myself blessed. Over the years, I witnessed my beloved parents overcome adversity and become successful entrepreneurs out of sheer hard work and perseverance. I was born in Czestochowa, Poland, 24 years ago, to two young parents living in a small village with in difficult financial situation. Just a few years before, communism had ended in our country and everyone faced a challenging time.
My Initial Academic Plan:
Early in my student life, my plans for the future always tended to revolve around Science. I loved to read encyclopedias and searched for every science program available on TV. Everything about science interested me, but most of all it was the logic and creativity behind it that fulfilled my curiosity. For a long time I thought I wanted to pursue a career in medicine and in fact I earned my first degree in nutrition from a medical university in Poland.
Big Change in Our Family:
When I turned 17, my parents ventured into the business of owning grocery stores. It was a challenging start in this new initiative. However, I rapidly attained knowledge and developed involvement in our new direction. From the very beginning I participated and helped my family as much as possible.
My parents were never discouraged and soon the business began to turn more and more prosperous. In a short time, I came to know everything about our family business from ground zero. Three years later, we decided to join a franchise grocery chain and with this merger I moved up internally once more and became an official manager. As our store’s popularity increased, my job became even more challenging. Enlarging our company spending, selling, and a larger employee team all brought on new requirements to our organization.
My increasing inspiration from my parents and my thirst for more knowledge also contributed to my new ideas. Today I realize the valuable experience I gained. In my situation I acquired the opportunity to apply what I learned each day directly into practice. It was during these changing times, and with the turn in success and progress, that I realized my growing passion for entrepreneurship.
My Search for Business Schools
After deciding to pursue my degree in Business Administration, I began researching programs, initially in the United States. I took entrance exams and started applying to schools.
One sunny day during spring vacation, after I had taken my exams, I was yachting with a group of friends on the lakes of the beautiful region of Masuria in the North East of Poland, when my phone rang and an unrecognized number popped up on my screen.
A Sacred Heart University representative was calling and I was informed of all details about the MBA with internship program in Luxembourg. A bonus was the fact that Sacred Heart is an American University with a campus in Luxembourg, one of the wealthiest country in Europe. This meant I could gain experiences from both continents. The idea of doing an internship while studying really appealed to me because it meant practicing what I learned right away.
After carefully considering and comparing SHU with all the schools I’d applied to, I felt this program offered exactly what I was looking for; it suited my needs and especially caught my attention with the quality internship program. Overall I was looking for a highly professional school with a world-wide accreditation that would provide me with great academic courses and real work experience at the same time.
Why Sacred Heart University
My admission went smoothly, and the staff extended support and assistance through the entire process. From application to graduation the administration and professors at SHU are there for me. The university helps coach and mentor students into getting a quality internship. Prior to the Master’s program, the only professional background I had was the experience working at the family store and I was not sure how to approach and enter the workforce on my own.
What I value in SHU Luxembourg is the large diversity in my classes, the personal contact and guidance, and a fantastic relationship with our teachers and staff. Luxembourg is one of the most culturally diverse places on earth which not only adds to my experience, but also feeds my soul.
36 graduates of Sacred Heart University began a new journey on December 9, 2016, after receiving diplomas and words of advice and encouragement from business leaders, scholars and classmates.
Dr. John Chalykoff, Dean, Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT), commenced the 25th Graduation Ceremony by congratulating the graduates and addressed, “You are graduating from a very special program, one where the faculty and staff have been dedicated to your success. And the Luxembourg students continue to be among the very best we have in Sacred Heart University. We will be proud to have you as alumni”.
Before the eager graduates were called upon to receive their diplomas, Ms. Kelsey Hopper opened the ceremony by singing the National Anthem of the United States of America.
The keynote speaker of the 25th Graduation Ceremony was Prof. Georges Hubner, Professor of Finance at HEC University, Liege and Chief Scientific Advisor at GAMBIT Financial Solutions. After congratulating the graduates and the faculty, Prof. Hubner reminded the students that the real world is tougher and competitive and everyone should be ready to face the challenges.
Dr. Alfred Steinherr, Academic Director of Sacred Heart University, Luxembourg, then announced the conferral of degrees which were awarded by Dean Chalykoff.
The Gold Medal of Excellence was awarded to Paulo Fernandes and Caroline Louise Linel won the Silver Medal of Excellence.
In his valedictorian speech, Mr. Fernandes thanked all the members of the faculty, staff and students and shared his memories of being a student of SHU.
Even though we are different in many aspects, today we are all the same. Today, we are all the same, with the same caps, the same gowns, and the same diploma. Today we are all 2016 MBA graduates from Sacred Heart University! Congratulations!- Paulo Fernandes
The ceremony concluded with a private cocktail dinner enjoyed by all graduates, SHU Alumni, family members and guests.

Natalie Retter (MBA with internship, ‘15) is one of SHU’s best ambassadors to prove it. Retter moved to Luxembourg from Ethiopia and changed her career path from working in an NGO to now, in a tax advisory firm.
A challenging transition, which was made easier with the proper guidance from SHU, Natalie shares she is now happy with the career path she has chosen for herself.

New Board-New Presidency-New Plans!
November 24, 2016—Jakob’s House in Clausen saw a spectacular evening as SHU students and alumni came out to celebrate Thanksgiving at the SHU Alumni Networking Drink. The event was more than just a platform for networking as SHU announced the new 2017-2018 Board Members of the SHU Luxembourg Alumni Association.
Meet the new SHU Luxembourg Alumni Association Board Members:
Larissa Best (MBA ’15), President
Aurélie Maire (MBA’15), Board Member

The newly appointed SHU Luxembourg Alumni Association will implement a fresh policy of a rotating presidency. Each year a different member of the board will take the reigns as president in an effort to diversify and implement the varying approaches each member brings to the table. Larissa Best (MBA ’15) will take on the role as President for the 2017-2018 calendar year. Best, along with Board Members, Aurélie Maire and Chris Marcilla, will propose and moderate assorted activities to help facilitate the relationships between SHU students and the SHULA. Full Circle: How One Student’s Journey to Luxembourg for Love, Brought Him to SHU
Edward Henry took a leap of faith when he moved to Luxembourg for his [now] fiancée in 2014—leaving behind his well-established career in the U.S.A.—to start fresh in the European Capital of Luxembourg.
Starting from scratch in a multilingual and multicultural country like Luxembourg is not a cakewalk.
Edward’s only hope for making a professional transition, he says, was to go back to being a student and pursue an MBA at the Sacred Heart University in Luxembourg. The MBA with internship program at SHU Lux was the perfect fit. Known for being an ‘opportunity provider’ for its students, SHU opened its doors to Edward, and brought to light his opportunities in the Luxembourg job market.
And the rest is history…
After graduating in 2015, Edward Henry, MBA, is now an Internal Auditor at Grohe Group.
SHU caught up with Edward for an exclusive interview about his unique journey to Luxembourg:
How did you first hear about the MBA with internship program in SHU?
How did you find life as a student in Luxembourg?
What was your journey like, from being a student/intern to a full-time employee?
Any changes in your personal/professional life while you were pursuing the MBA?
How did the MBA help to build your career in Luxembourg?
Here’s what Edward had to say…
