Frequently Asked Questions
Additional education after college has become a prerequisite for career advancement in many fields. An MBA is a critical educational component of the highly qualified executive. Companies around the globe are looking for someone who has been trained across all the different business disciplines—this could be you!
No, not all MBA programs are equal. We know that you have many options today for acquiring additional education from global online resources to our local competitors. As our prospective students are savvy consumers, we know you are weighing your options carefully. Please know, we are the ONLY globally accredited university MBA program in Luxembourg. Our MBA Programs are official and recognized by the Luxembourg Ministry of Higher Education. The Jack Welch College of Business & Technology at SHU meets the highest quality standards. We are the ONLY program in Luxembourg that has the honor of being accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
The accreditation ensures the highest standards especially as it pertains to the professors and adjunct professors hired by the university. Not only do students want conveniently scheduled classes and locations, interesting course work, true peers in the classroom and challenging subjects but MOST importantly, our students want engaged professors who possess real intellect and who have been in real-life corporate situations. This is what we offer.
In the United States, accreditation of a university is done by one of nine regional accreditation agencies. Sacred Heart University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges-- www.neasc.org. In order to be eligible for the AACSB accreditation, business schools must first be accredited by their regional agency.
The MBA with an internship program offers students with little or no experience the opportunity to work in a professional environment using newly acquired skills from the course work. This generation of students brings vitality and technical skills to the seasoned professional participating in the same coursework. Teaching and learning between the MBA program students makes both programs richer. Professors lead a discussed based course raising practical life professional grade questions. Real knowledge is gained.
Certificate programs are graduate-level, advanced studies in specialized skills. Develop new skills and build expertise in a specialized area to update your professional profile, advance your career, or broaden your knowledge base. You can earn a professional graduate certificate at SHU in Modern Business Management, Global Leadership, Investment, or Finance.
There are 4 courses in each certificate program. These series is unique to the Certificate you choose.
Yes, of course! Credits can be transferred to the MBA program and tuition fees will be adjusted. Meet with the SHUL office staff for more details.
The same SHU MBA program exists in two places--Fairfield, Connecticut (USA) and Luxembourg City, Luxembourg (EU). The university in Luxembourg is a branch of the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology of the US campus. However, MBA with Internship program is only offered in Luxembourg.
At SHU in Luxembourg, additional course material may be discussed surrounding European policy and viewpoints i.e., in Accounting and Law . The Luxembourg courses are either taught by full-time US main campus professors or Luxembourg-based practitiones with strong academic qualifications.. All classes can be taken in class, although on-line classes for a few courses are also available.
Once accepted into the MBA program in Luxembourg, you are matriculated as a student on the main campus in Fairfield and always have the option to take courses in the US.
Quality education and a high caliber of academic standards are the most important components of a university, how do you choose your professors?
Sacred Heart’s approach to managing the quality of the student learning experience and providing public confidence in the quality and standards of higher education all boils down to the right choice in professors who understand what it is like to be an entrepreneur and work in a corporate environment.
The MBA is structured around eight core courses and three electives (nine credit hours), giving students the opportunity to focus on an area of interest to them such as management or finance. Our programs are designed for ambitious individuals wishing to pursue their professional activities while acquiring a graduate degree.
Foundation courses may be required if you have no academic background in management, economics/ statistics. Each of the two foundation courses is worth three academic credit hours and requires 36 hours of class contact (12 class sessions of 3 hours, 36 hours of class contact).
The entire program without the foundation courses consists of 36 academic credit hours. When, where and for how long are classes held?
Each course usually runs 6 to 12 weeks, which makes it easy for students to plan their course load across the year.
Classes are located in the heart of the business district of Luxembourg in the neighborhood of Kirchberg.
All courses at Sacred Heart University are only offered in the evening during the week (Monday-Friday), between the hours of 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm, and occasionally on the weekends.
The Part-time MBA and Certificate programs are ongoing programs that allow you to start at almost any time of the year.
The MBA with internship starts every year in mid-August or mid-July if foundation courses are required.
Application deadlines are:
European/EEA students - July 1 of the year you start the progam
All other students - May 1
On average, it takes students two years to complete the program. You are allowed up to six years for completion of the program.
It is a 18-month program including the 9-month internship.
In mid-August, right at the beginning of the first course we organize an Orientation Day where we give a talk about the internship-related questions: How to apply for an internship and what support will SHU give you.
Individual coaching will help students with CV and cover letter writing as well as prepare them for the interview.
You need to have started the MBA with internship program before you can start applying for internships.
It takes about one year to complete a Certificate program.
Student visas will only be granted to students who are enrolling in the MBA with internship program. Once students have been admitted to the university and they have received their official admission letter they can apply for the authorization to stay for study purpose. We will help you with the visa process. IMPORTANT: This process can take 3 to 4 months.
Unfortunately, Luxembourg doesn’t allow family members of the MBA student to accompany the MBA student. They do not give dependent visa for MBA students.
You will need to have a Bachelors degree. For those prospective students with the equivalent of four years of university study, your non-US degree can be evaluated by the SHU office staff.
No, you do not need a university degree to participate in this program. Please contact us to evaluate your professional work experience.
Waivers are not automatic for any candidate. GMAT waiver requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and are based on a combination of advanced academic credentials with a substantial history of professional achievement.
You are eligible for a GMAT waiver if you have:
- A graduate degree from an accredited institution, or a J.D., Ph.D. or M.D.
- A professional certification i.e. CPA, CFA, CMA, CIA or CFP
- A SHU Certificate with a min GPA of 3.5
- 5+ years of substantive work experience
Maybe. As part of our supportive learning environment, we want to set you up for success. A lack of English proficiency can be a serious obstacle to your performance in the MBA program. If you did your studies in English or you worked in an English environment for several years you don’t need to pass an English test.
Our staff can assist in assessment and finding tutoring if required.
Sacred Heart University is an accredited university. If you have taken some courses at other accredited universities, our academic review board will review the syllabus for each course and more than likely the credits will be transferred directly to your SHU program here in Luxembourg.
You will be able to transfer your SHU academic credits to other high-caliber academic institutions.
We recommend meeting with the Head of Campus to plan your course of study. At this meeting, you will review the order of courses necessary to complete the degree and how your availability fits exactly into completing the coursework. All schedules can be tailored made for the student.
